How does one culture metamorphose within another? The first half of the recital comprises composers of the stature of Academy Award winner Tan Dun and Zhu Jian'er (Resident Composer with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra), traveling with poise between their ancient culture and that of the west, to create music that is compelling and individualistic. First generation Australian composers are unique in their melding together of the old and the new. Smart performs works by some of Australia's most eminent first generation composers, including Julian Yu, Constantine Koukias and Gao Ping.
